Pre-Opening Circulation

Thank you for your interest in volunteering at the Lewes Public Library. Please read the following volunteer position description. If you are interested in this position, please download and complete an application for Volunteer Service or pick up one at the Library’s Circulation Desk. You then will be contacted by the Volunteer Coordinator and/or appropriate staff supervisor.

PLEASE NOTE: New volunteers are brought in on an as needed basis. Volunteer opportunities arise when there is turnover and/or new programming. When you submit an application, we hold onto your information and notify you when there is a training scheduled for any new openings. There may be a significant lag in the time from when you express interest in volunteering to when we need a new volunteer.


Primary Responsibilities: Emptying book drop and checking in materials; locating items on the Morning Holds Report and processing the holds; locating items on the Clean Holds Report and processing the items; searching for items on overdue notices; locating items on other reports as requested; shelf reading; shifting items on shelves; and other duties as assigned.

Time Commitment: A regularly scheduled two hour shift per week. Shifts are on Monday – Friday from 8:00 – 10:00 am. Depending on the amount of work to be done the shift may end earlier than 10:00 am but will not extend past that time.

Requirements: Bending, stretching, walking, pushing book-filled carts (about 10 pounds), lifting and carrying stacks of books (at least 5 pounds), reading, writing, attention to detail, accuracy and consistency, ease with computers, flexible, and reliable.

Supervision: Volunteer Coordinator


New volunteers are required to attend a three-hour volunteer training session and participate in on-the-job training with staff and experienced volunteers.
