Book Donations

The Friends of the Lewes Public Library are accepting book donations starting Tuesday, September 3, 2024.

For details on what they accept, how many items they accept, and when they accept them, see below. NOTE: The Friends accept up to 10 donated items at one time. Donations are restricted due to limited storage space and volunteer time required to process donations.

The Friends accept:

  • Adult fiction less than 10 years old
  • Children’s books
  • History
  • Biography
  • CDs, DVDs and Blu-ray discs

Books must be free of mildew, mold, and dirt. They should not exhibit excessive spine damage, have missing pages, or be missing their covers. Books cannot have water damage.

For media, sets must be complete and cannot be missing the original case art.

The Friends do NOT accept:

  • Non-fiction other than history and biography
  • Textbooks
  • Encyclopedias
  • Book sets
  • Readers Digest books
  • Foreign language books
  • Cookbooks
  • Vintage books
  • Coffee table books (oversized)
  • Travel books
  • Magazines

If the Friends does not accept your items, we do not have any names of organizations that want used books. We suggest you call any organization before you visit them to donate your books.

Book donations are accepted in the Friends’ Shop inside the library. The Shop hours are:
Monday – Friday from 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM
Saturday from 10:00 AM – 1:30 PM

Please bring all book donations to the Friends’ Shop during Shop hours. Do NOT leave donations outside the library, in the book drop, or in the library lobby.

If you cannot come to the library to donate your books when the Friends’ Shop is open, you can make an appointment by contacting the Friends at FLPL19958@gmail.com.

Some books are added to the library’s collection, when and if they meet the needs of the library. The majority of books are made available for sale in the Friends Shop or at the specialty book sales operated by the Friends several times each year.

The Friends also have contracts with two companies that accept used books. The Friends process any books that do not sell and ship them to these companies.
