The Lewes Public Library is hosting Tax-Aide volunteers who will prepare federal and Delaware income tax returns for the 2022 filing year. Volunteers are certified by the IRS. Tax-Aide, a joint venture between the IRS and AARP, is a free service open to taxpayers of all ages with low to moderate income. AARP membership is not required.

Volunteers may only prepare returns for which they are trained, so some returns are deemed out-of-scope by the IRS and AARP. Lengthy, complex returns which are time consuming to prepare will not be done. Taxpayers need to be sure they have received all their relevant tax documents prior to their appointment as no amended returns will be prepared.

Tax preparation will take place on Thursdays and Fridays from 8:30 AM to 3:00 PM from Thursday, February 2 until Friday, April 14. Look for the sign in the lobby, directing you to the correct room.

Appointments are required and can be made starting Wednesday, January 18 by calling 302-703-7198. You must leave your name and the best phone number for a callback. Callbacks for appointments, which may appear as “wireless/unknown caller,” will occur within 48 hours. DO NOT call or visit the Library to make an appointment.

During the past 2 tax seasons, taxpayers were required to drop-off their tax documents and leave the premises. This year, taxpayers may remain in the room while their return is prepared and reviewed. Taxpayers will depart from their appointment with their completed return and documents.

Although masks are not required this year, if any Tax-Aide volunteer tests positive for COVID, the program will be forced to cease operations while volunteers quarantine. This will result in the cancellation of appointments. Please be considerate of Tax-Aide volunteers and consider wearing a mask while you are in the room with them.

In advance of a scheduled appointment, taxpayers must complete IRS Form 13614-C, Intake/Interview booklet. A packet containing the Form can be picked up at the Circulation Desk at the Library during regular library hours. The form can be downloaded from the IRS website.

Taxpayers need to bring the following to their appointment:

  • previous year’s return
  • social security cards for everyone listed on the return
  • picture identification
  • all forms reporting income
  • documents in support of itemized deductions
  • voided check for direct deposits
  • IRS security PIN#, if provided

A complete list of required items can be found here.
